EEK ok so I know it's supposed to be unsettling but holy crap. the way this made me feel sick to read, despite beautiful writing?? what a master class of creepy genre and how to create atmosphere and tension. I want to watch the show now to see how it is compared to the book, but I think I need some time to process before I do.
I slogged through this book. Around 1/4 of the way in, I finally thought, "Maybe it's getting good." I am not sure it ever did. I kept reading anyway and I did enjoy the ending. It is an objectively good book. There were a lot of well-placed red herrings and I was guessing the whole way through. But...
There were no redeemable characters. Maybe Camille was toward the end, but knowing what her thoughts were over 17 chapters kind of stains any progress she made. Everyone in this book is horrible, mean-spirited, selfish, neurotic, perverted, traumatized beyond belief, or a combination of those descriptors. It's a lot to deal with. But you feel for them. And that is pretty good writing. Even if it takes 100 pages to get with it.
And one more important thing. It is also graphic in a way that is gross. I am not a squeamish person. I am not deterred by most things. I love gritty crime novels. Everyone knows I'm a Karin Slaughter and Chevy Stevens stan. I am fine with body horror and violence. Things don't tend to bother me. And I'm not saying this to sound cool or better than anyone. I am saying this because the descriptions of the children in this book made me feel sick to my stomach. Check your TWs.

Once in a while, I like to read a thriller! And since we're in October, I thought it was the right moment for it! Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn was the chosen one!!
Two girls are murdered in Wind Gap, a small town in Missouri. This case is assigned to Camille, a reporter who grew up in this town but now lives in Chicago. Revisiting the hometown is a painful experience to our main character because it takes her back to her past: the loss of her sister and a complicated relationship with her mother.
When I was halfway through I felt like this was an average thriller. It was good enough to keep me interested but not fascinating or mindblowing. I should have kept my mouth shut. The last 100 pages changed my mind. It’s not brilliant but it’s certainly not average. The ending was unexpected. I can’t really say more because I don’t want to spoil anything for you but I found the whole concept pretty intriguing.
