beyond perfect it’s actually sickening

“The face you give the world tells the world how to treat you.”

Sharp Objects. The book that somehow came off both ordinary and strange at once.

Set in small town Missouri, Camille Preaker is a reporter sent on the dreaded trip back to her hometown. She is expected to formulate an article on the recent yet unsolved murders of two young girls, but the town isn’t pleased with such an idea. As old trauma begins to resurface, Camille starts to question why she ever agreed to come back home.

This was a terribly intriguing book. I found myself enraptured in the eeriness surrounding the small town setting. I could feel what Camille felt: like I’d been living in this town for half of my life, suffocating because of it. It’s so great when an author can communicate feelings through protagonists in such a way that their thoughts muddle with your own throughout the novel.

It’s hard to fathom how Gillian Flynn was able to fit so much story into a book as little as this one. The atmosphere, characters and plot were written and propelled at a great pace. The vast majority of characters were horrible; I hated them right off of the bat. Surprisingly enough, though, that made everything even better.

The beginning started off a bit slow, but soon enough I was hooked. I got spoiled for the murderer less than halfway in, though that still didn’t stop me from becoming invested in everything about Sharp Objects.

Some have argued that this felt a little bit like a character study, and I can easily see where that comes from. Camille’s trauma is explored in a certain depth for a good portion of the book. I liked that. There was a good balance and connection between trauma and crime.
This was a really well written and put together book!
