Okey, but creepy, writingstyle sometimes hard to follow, good plot

En väldigt spännande deckare som utspelar sig i en liten håla där alla har sina hemligheter och anklagar varandra! Vem kan man lita på?

Was boring to me

I disliked this book. Firstly, I didn’t like the main character Camille at all and the way she kept sexually describing her 13 year old sister was just creepy and weird. Secondly I understand Amma is meant to be mature for her age but hard to picture a 13 year old acting and talking in that way and taking hard drugs. The plot could have been good but I felt nothing happened until the last 20 pages and it was a let down ending. Also Camille’s fling with 18 year old John was just pointless.

This was a great Thriller/Mystery book that I could not put down no matter how much other stuff I needed to do. Every character seemed like a fully developed person with their own thoughts and motives. Camille seems like a genuine person with real personal demons and realistic strained relationships with her family. Every character introduced seemed to have a distinct role that only they could fulfill. The whole story it is pretty clear that Camille's mother has some issues that she seems to be taking out on her children and others, but it doesn't really dawn that she is capable of actual harm until 3/4 through the book. From that point on I half expected a horror movie style jump scare where she was somewhere that she should not have been and catch Camille off guard. The final twist where it was revealed that Amma was the real character was both shocking and not shocking at the same time. Just from the characterization she was given since the beginning it is easy to retrospectively see that she was the only character capable of such harm on another human, but the fact that she was only 13 years old and had occasional tender moments with Camille made us want to believe that Amma was actually an abused child that was caused by her monster of a mother. I also liked the subplots of Camille with Richard the detective since it was talking about struggling with body image issues and not wanting to be vulnerable with anyone for fear that they will reject you purely based on physical factors. Richard does eventually turn his back on her for her body image, driving further home that life can be cruel and not everyone will get their happily ever after. While Camille didn't get the knight she had other extremely good people in her life that loved her even if she didn't get her conventional romance or familial love (Curry and his wife).

I was expecting a little more because Gillian Flynn is such a popular author, but for the most part, I found Sharp Objects to be anticlimactic. The plot follows reporter, Camille, who returns to her hometown after years of being away to learn about murders taking place. As a protagonist, she felt unreliable and her actions are so disjointed, I felt this whole book did not flow well. I was able to figure out the mystery (or part of it), early on and kept going only to find out if I was right. There are no likeable characters, Camille isn’t that great of a person, and the whole mystery aspect was sort of pushed to the side and overrun by the family’s issues. I was pretty disappointed but am looking forward to watching the miniseries soon anyways.

Not enjoyable and hard to believe it was written by a woman.
