I had to read this for school…
and i’m glad i did. it was not amazing, but it was very interesting and entertaining. like all memoirs, it did get slow at times but i managed to get through it and i’m glad i did.

Incredible

What words could possibly be used to describe such an incredible, inspirational woman or the impeccably written book to bring us through the journey of her life.

5 stars isn’t enough. This book read like a dystopian novel and I can’t believe the bravery at every page turn. I was completely hooked - a great and eye opening read

very inspiring story she risked a lot to come to south korea and is speaking out about south koreans looking down on defectors! also touched on the difficulties in assimilation even though they’re technically the same country and the thought of reunification. just shows the strength people need when they defect

Highly recommended p

This is one of those books that I feel like I need to buy for everyone. Hyeonseo Lee’s story is only one of many stories of the hardships that refugees go through, but it’s still important. I would recommend it to anyone.

Hyeonseo Lee is an absolute bad ass. She's exposed to me through this memoir a whole new world: DPRK and the human rights abuses it has. As an American who lives a very free life, I can only imagine what it is like for your every move to watched, scrutinized, and reported by anyone from your sister to your teacher. Why aren't more people talking about this?
