A tale of impossible love, The Posthumous Affair details the mismatched characters Grace, The Fat Princess, and Daniel, the small and beautiful orphan. There are moments of beauty and moments of the macabre and creates a very fairytale-esque world. The most apparent influences of the story are Hamlet and Great Expectations and a knowledge of both is probably necessary to understand both the characters who refer to these texts and characters as a means of exploring their own situations.

Whilst exploring the story of Grace and Daniel, Friel also explores the relationship between reader, writer and the written word in a manner that reminded me greatly of Italo Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveller. If you like that, I'd recommend this.
