I really don't know how to rate this book. It was deeply sad and I felt very connected to the characters. It's one of those, I'm glad I read it once but I'm not sure I could read it again any time soon.

Well-written and interesting. A really even-handed and compelling look at French-Huron relations.

This is an overwhelmingly sad story, beautifully told. In my Catholic childhood I made many trips to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and the Martyrs Shrine in Midland, Ontario. The story of the Jesuit martyrs who were killed by the Iroquois as they lived peacefully among the Huron is a familiar mythology; indeed, the image of the palisades going up in flames at the end of the introductory movie in the park (as the screen rose to reveal the recreated village) is imprinted in my brain. The Orenda goes a long way toward dispelling some of that myth, fleshing it out to tell many stories.

This book was riveting - I truly could not put it down. Beautifully written, thoroughly researched, informative and heart rendering in it's honesty.

This book is compelling, intense, often heart-felt, and even more often tragic. I didn't like this book, but I appreciated it. It was very upsetting and there were several things about the ending that I didn't like. Still, it was excellently researched, flowed pretty well and the points of view were on point. If you picked a paragraph at random in the entire book, you'd know who's point of view it was. I do recommend this book, but be warned re-tragic subject matter.
