Really enjoyed these stories, from an author completely new to me (this was one of my #portybypost books.) They really nailed my love for 'place as a character' and that sense of feeling uprooted, of not belonging somewhere where everyone else seems to. 'The Steps', the central story, is definitely the highlight.

The Steps was the stand out. Minimalist stories, and very domestic. Snapshots of the mood of Rome rather than a detailed description of place.

My favourite thing about Jhumpa Lahiri's writing is how she makes these small observations of things, adding up to creating the perfect visuals in our minds. The way you really feel as if you're in the scene described, and empathetic to every situation. This short story set was very different compared to Unaccustomed Earth, and the main character is 'Rome' and 'Italy'. Ever since she began writing solely in Italian, there haven't been any concrete characters as such, but this was an interesting read. However, I do miss the old Jhumpa, I won't lie.
