I absolutely *loved* the artwork; the style of drawing, the energy, the motifs, the colouring (the edition I read was coloured by Bolland, not Higgins).

Less enthusiastic about the 'woman in refrigerator' phenomenon. The mutilation of Barbara - the only female character in the entire comic - is unacceptable. She is shot in the spine which will leave her paralysed, photographed and used as a tool to get to her father. I'm done with the maiming of women for dramatic effects. Women are not living objects you can introduce to shoot down (literally in this case) in order to give male characters a reason to flex their manly muscles of manliness.

I have read this number of times. Re-reading it again! And you cannot *not* finish in one sitting.
One of the best books I have ever read! Excellent Writing, Stunning Illustrations.

Once you read this "Nothing’s going to be the same… …not ever again."
You will understand Batman's story is not about Batman, who is the hero? who is the villain?

Alan Moore redefined Superhero with Watchmen, he redefined Supervillian with this one!

A classic of the genre, and one of the first of many stand-alone dark graphic novels. The theme is very strong - are we all corruptible, willing to abandon our morals after "one bad day"? That's the question the Joker poses, and Comissioner Gordon and his daughter Barbara answer it.

The artwork is cinematic, using mirror images to cut between scenes as well as using coloring and lighting to set the tone.

The story itself didn't entirely work for me. For all the violence, the Joker's plan seemed...underwhelming.
Spoiler Did he truly think he could drive Commissioner Gordon insane by taking his clothes and showing him naked pics of his wounded daughter? Why does the Joker/Moore think nudity or paralysis will drive people insane? It has nothing to do with the Joker's backstory as given here. It just seems shocking for the sake of being shocking, with no connection to who the characters are.

But it is interesting to see the Joker as the protagonist. He's the one driving the action, and the joke at the end makes me think that he's come to a realization about his own delusional view of the world. Overall worth the read.
