The series as a whole is great. But sadly the final volume is one of the most underwhelming ones. The main story mostly gets wrapped up in a confrontation that's very exposition heavy, monologue heavy and not super satisfying.

I do like the way most of the character arcs end though.

About half of the book is various bonus stories taking place all over the chronology. Some of these are cute, some are **spicy** but really, most of them are pretty skippable and do not add all that much.

If the ending of the series had been included in the last volume it likely wouldn't have felt as rushed but as is the pacing felt off since it picked up right were volume 4 ended. I am a bit salty about

the Nie clan head dude being the puppet master instead of Zewu-jun since it's a reveal that ends up meaning nothing in the grand scheme of things whereas if Lan Zhan's brother was the baddie it could have gone in a more interesting and compelling direction.

... Oh well.

Since the majority of this volume was extras that is what the rating I am giving will reflect. Some of them were fine but I was not expecting the horny smut escapades that occurred and the rape-y vibes were prevalent in the non/dub-con scenes. There was some domestic bliss I suppose but even that felt like a superficial means to get them back in bed.

DNF at 50% (incense burner chapter), liked the ending of the story, confession was subpar, extras are terrible and I wish they hadn’t been included

This is the end of the series, but half of the book are extra short stories that mostly take place after the end of the book. It's heartwarming to see the characters living their happy lives after the end ! And the story mostly share how the main characters are happy together and how they live together as lovers, which is both interesting and satisfying.
But there are so much intimate scenes. Very detailed intimate scenes. Also please read trigger warning for those if you're not confortable with it ! They're very much in love with each other, but gosh that was so graphic.
I love this series very much, but I'm not really an enjoyer of spice in written relationships, so all those part were a bit of a miss for me. However, having the main characters which I've grown to love, cherish and root for finally be happy and true to each other more than made up for my personnal preferences.
As for the rest, it is as exceptional as the rest of the series. The theme of reputation and presenting vs inner life is masterfully executed (through most of the main characters, each in their own way !), and I would like to shout out to the complexity and grey-scale of secondary characters. It could have been very simple, but in the end, we stand with Jin Ling knowing the culprits, but with no one to just hate in all simplicity.
The depiction of Jiang Cheng emotions was fantastic, and finished portraying a character that I really liked as a character, and at the same time despise as a person.

And that confession is amazing.

I'd like to end the review by saying that I began reading expecting a good romance, and what I got was a good story (with a good romance on top. A romance written on the ashes of a tragedy). The events and themes are amazingly told, and the way the characters are treated, respecting each of their quirks until the end, even during pay-off scenes, is truly commanding respect.
