I started this book fully prepared to not like it. I don’t care about New York, I have never been there, and tbh I think people who make loving it/being from there their entire personality need to touch grass. But I love the other books I’ve read from N.K. Jemisin so I wanted to give it a go and I am so glad I did because I had the best freaking time with this!!

The City We Became is part Lovecraftian sci-fi/horror, part love letter to the city of New York and its unique and individual counterparts. The concept: cities, once they grow big enough, Become. They awaken, alive and bright and conceptually represented by a person. But this causes a compilation to the multi-verse and when New York starts to wake up, Bad Shit Happens. Enter the avatars, the people chosen to represent the burrows of New York, the Lady in White, a multiverse baddy here to shit on your lawn, and a boatload of chaos and identity crises.

I don’t understand how Jemisin does it but this was simultaneously funny, wholesome, action-packed, and so, so endearing. Seriously I loved everything about this book, from the insanely loveable characters to the world building to the whole mind-blowing concept underpinning it all. This might, in fact, be my favourite book by her so far and I will be shortly leaping headfirst into devouring book 2 because I am so desperate to know how things will pan out for these people!! Highly recommend this!

I love N. K. Jemison, and the voice this book opens with is endearing and complex and individual, but then the book continues to delve into other voices that seemed a bit over-simplified to me. I loved the representation in this book and the premise is so cool, but I found that it was a bit YA-esque for my taste. I loved how her Broken Earth series was a complex narrative exploring the insidious and enduring evils of a society based on hatred and enslavement of other human beings, and for my taste this was not as deep a dive as she usually does, though it certainly accomplished other important work. Perhaps it will appeal more to those who are fans of her YA novels. I still look forward to seeing where this series goes!

The book both annoyed and intrigued me. Definitely will check out the sequel. The author is very descriptive and creative with building her world and the characters

I was lost at the beginning then all the pieces started falling in place. I was so excited then boom, the ending was as flat as a pancake. It was so underwhelming and uneventful based on the rest of the book. So disappointed
