Boring, repetitive, no coherent plot to hold all the surreal magic together. It seems like there might be a good book in here, if an editor could cut it down to half the size. But as-is, with the constant introduction of new and totally dull characters and endless meandering around the actual conflict (some sort of supernatural threat to the city?), it is unreadably bad.

A fantastic allegory about racism, gentrification, and city life. I highly recommend the audiobook, for all the accents and sci-fi special effects. Loved it so much, I created the Wikipedia page for it!

I loved the characters, I loved the vivid depiction of the city, I loved the themes and speculative ideas and how they wove together. But the pacing was bad enough to bring it from 4 stars to 3.
