Im actually shook that this book has less than 4 stars because it is AMAZING. As someone born and raised in NYC who now lives somewhere else, this made me rediscover my love for the city. I think the choice of avatars, especially the primary, was so powerful, and I love the way their character development adds to the world building in the story. Jemisin is truly a talented writer, I’m already reading the next book and lovin it!!
i tore through it very quickly but did not like it. on a vibe level, percy jackson for adults, i fear
EDIT: i've thought about it a little more and i can now articulate one of the things that bothered me so much about this book. a STRIKING lack of metaphor. a complete inability to trust in the reader's capacity for analysis. a compulsive need to get ahead of the work of interpretation and outright TELL the reader what the characters/intertexts/themes of the novel are supposed to mean (i.e. the ethnic ambiguity of one of the characters is symbolic of the history of the island of manhattan... the novel is a response to hp lovecraft's racism... the actions of a certain character are representative of the concept of white women's fragility weaponized against men of color...). i am an adult, and i can put 2+2 together!! i feel condescended to when you don't trust in my ability to put 2+2 together!!!!

This book has some powerful metaphors about gentrification, excellent action scenes, and a great ensemble cast dynamic. I nitpick over the stereotypes this book plays into, but I think that’s part of the point of the story. Was a fun read overall.
