Absolutely fucking great. An unoriginal concept told with such emotional intensity, with characters and a story seemingly built on stereotypes but that are told with such nuance and empathy that the book quickly consumes cliches. I quite despise the narrator, as was clearly Quailley’s point, and is half of why this books so brilliantly. Damn. I have now purchased everything Quailley has published. They’ve written something so extraordinary that few books can touch, in their work or otherwise, but wherever they’re headed I’ll follow.

This is FANTASTIC. There are so many things about it that I really enjoyed: how trippy it is, the Frankenstein science and thriller twists and the unabashed ethical violations all over the place that make it kind of funny that the words "ethics commitee" appear in the book at all, all the MURDER, Evelyn's backstory, everything about Martine as a character, the barely-there selfcest vibes - but mostly I really, really loved how splendidly crafted the narrative voice is. Evelyn is a tremedous character. She's shaped by her traumatic past into a bona-fide sociopath but seemingly totally unaware of it because it's just the way she sees the world, and it doesn't even bear remarking upon. Her worldview is strangely alien but still consistent, like she's seeing the same reality through different senses, and her narrative voice is just so incredibly compelling. I'm a bit in awe of the skill that went in crafting this, and I absolutely want to read everything this author publishes next.
