Went in expecting a domestic thriller with a sci-fi edge but it was more a sci-fi novel with a domestic thriller edge. Except that the domestic thriller part wasn't very well developed. We read lots about the nutrient baths necessary to grow human tissues, but not so much about why the clone wants to kill her husband. Interesting, but frustrating.

Synopsis: Evelyn has been trying to resume her “normal” life working in cloning after her husband left her for another woman, a woman who happens to be a clone of her that her husband made to be the perfect wife. However, after a distressing call from Martine, the clone herself, and arrives to the house to find her ex-husband dead, her left gets a little more interesting.

Thoughts: This book has such an intriguing premise, and I did find the main characters to be really interesting! I’ve been trying to figure out if I ended up liking this book as much as I expected to, and ultimately I think it didn’t quite live up to expectation. I think I expected this book to be more of a thriller than it was, so I was a little disappointed that it felt like not a lot really happened in the book. I also think there are many other books, movies, and video games that discuss the ethics of autonomy in clones/robots/AIs (the Mass Effect games are an excellent example) and I can’t say that this book said anything super new on the subject in my opinion. I also found the ending to be a little bit lack luster and easy. I do think this is a great read, and can see a lot of people clicking with it!

(((((((((((((((spoilers))))))))))))))))))))I had no real interest in Evelyn or Martine.
Super Ultra security and Seyed is in the lab, but no one knows this? He snuck into the lab, where building security cameras didn't see him, and while in was in the lab, stealing/selling Evelyn's work, no one would know it was him because he was carrying a ski-mask that would've concealed his face so no one would recognize him, even though Evelyn finds him in the lab, with the ski-mask in his hands?

A woman discovers that her husband has been cheating on her with her clone, which she finds to be even more of a betrayal because it means he's been stealing her work. Complications ensue! A clever and creepy sort of domestic thriller, in the ballpark of something like Gone Girl, but raises lots of interesting questions about identity, nature vs. nurture, and chilling thoughts about how your partner would design a clone of you if they thought they could remake you without some of your more annoying qualities. Thumbs up.

This book was pretty interested and a quick read. I didn’t feel like the ending was very satisfying.

Normal review: this book is introspective, moody, and very character/relationship focused. It has interesting plotting, if a bit predictable. There are a few plot holes re: where in hell are any authorities of any kind during any of this. As a whole it's still pretty enjoyable, and it's fun to watch the characters develop. There are some fascinating reflections of identity and nature/nurture debates tucked away in here. The text is rich ground for discussions on misogyny, both internal and external, and abusive relationships.

Weird, hyperspecific review: At points, the narration in this book is so reminiscent of a romance novel that I texted the friend who recommended it to me to ask if she bangs her clone. "No," he said. "She doesn't bang her own clone." After finishing it, I am not entirely convinced he was right.

I guess I hadn’t thought a lot about cloning and now I might have thought too much about it?
