I think the book tackled some difficult issues well and I could identify with some of the complex feelings of the characters. I appreciated the honesty in it.

2024 UPDATE:
Bumping up from 3.75 stars to a nice even 5. Loved this so much more the second time around. So much complexity, so many layers. The themes really came through and I will be thinking about this book for a long time. Trigger warnings: sexual assault, rape, gore.

Kinda gave me Addie LaRue vibes, but this succeeded where that one fell flat for me. I'd like a sequel, please.

I was HOOKED on this book!

Please do read the trigger warnings for this book there’s some heavy themes in it!

To be fully transparent it took me 3 attempts to start this book. I don’t think I was in the correct head space to read it the first few times but once I was ready OH BOY I was ready. The premise of this book was so interesting to me! Secret societies mixed with the supernatural is a great combination and I loved Alex as a protagonist! She was competant and different and I found that really appealing and refreshing to read.

Darlington you own my heart I love you

The reason it’s a 4 stars is the choice of language used to describe POC knowing a white woman has written this made me uncomfortable. Mongrel? HATED that! I’m a biracial woman and it gave me shivers and goosebumps to read that! I don’t really understand the urge white authors have to write about POC experiences when it’s actually just unessacary? Would the plot work without that? Yes! You did that for what? I don’t personally think it felt like a prominent issue and I could get past it and enjoy the book for what it was but would understand discomfort for POC.

I hope in book two this improves and we also get more of my bby Darlington!!!

This is a fantastic book. While it is often heavy and hard topics, it is well done. I'm glad I read it and will read the sequel.

Alex stern is not a good person, but she is one hell of a character to follow for this story. I really liked most of the story in regards to its themes of power, the abuse of power, the elitism of Yale. Honestly, if it were not for one specific plot point, or I would have given it five stars, I will most likely continue reading the series, but with the understanding that it is a little bit more graphic, then I had thought it was going to be going in.

Want to make it very explicit that the SA referenced in the content warnings in one instance refers to a minor/p*dophilia. The scene is very graphic. Be safe.

I liked this better than Bardugo's YA. The worldbuilding is intriguing, although slightly underdeveloped and quite confusing at first.
