There are times when authors make decisions with their characters that make you fall out of love with them. When it happens, it truly is a sad moment for the reader because falling out love means you dont want to read their books anymore. For Louise Penny it was with Armand Gamache in The Nature of the Beast. In the case of Robert Thorogood, it happens with Judith Potts in Queen of Poisons.

When the moment arrives in this book, I was so frustrated, angry, and disappointed. I instantly said to myself, there better be consequences. There aren't and in that decision I fell out of love with the characters.

It is so disappointing that I don't want to read about these characters any more. I may read the next book; but, with Louise Penny and Armand Ganache, the follow up A Great Reckoning, the characters became so insufferable and unbelievable that I don't care anymore. And, I suspect, Thorogood will do the same.
I'm thinking of reading Glass Houses but I lost trust in the author's willingness to have the characters suffer true consequences for their hubris that I am skeptical to continue.

Thorogood seems to be doing the same with Judith Potts, especially in having the character say that they are not going to change. It is that hubris that creates the divisive instant in this book for me and it is the same reason that I fall out of pleasure with the series. Disappointed.
