3.5/5 A gripping, if out of control, dive into a Yale filled with occult themes. Mature themes of various forms of abuse are mixed with a more YA-feeling mystery. Bardugo continues to show her hand at making approachable thrillers in the fantasy genre - her character-driven imagery paints vivid pictures of flawed protagonists. I would argue the same depth afforded to main characters in this story make the antagonists feel flat, and the ending leaves much to be desired (common with many fantasy-mystery series), but the author continues to carve her niche style on the genre. However, the timeskipping setting takes out a fair amount of the punch from emotional turns - this is a book with as much wasted potential as landed story beats.

3.5 stars. Was good as an audiobook, but I think it would be amazing as a book book. Need to reread when the sequel comes out and not listen to it next time.
