I somehow skipped the first and second histories of Rome from Tom Holland, but this one is a great overview. I've read the other big histories of Rome this year-History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and SPQR. Both were informative and good. Tom Holland is much easier to read and more of a popular history writer.
I found the social commentary portions the most interesting and different from the other histories I've read this year. It made me wish the scope of this book was a little narrower.

Holland’s novelistic prose is as easy to read as ever, though there are times when it becomes a little too glib and you’re left wanting a little more substance. As a primer for the glory days of the Roman Empire, this more than suffices though.

It's narrated by the author. The intro sets out well what it will try to detail, but the first part is going allllll the way back to the fall of Roman Kingdom and the R*pe of the Sabines. Interesting, and probably indicative of the 'popular' part of popular history. But not new details for me.
I think it would be doable to sum up the Roman Kingdom briefly before moving onto the fall of the Republic.
