“The Bachelor” meets “Hunger Games”. Really enjoyed this and not sure why it took me so long to pick it up. Diving into book 2 ASAP.

BOOK REVIEW

"Okay..." was literally the first words out of my mouth after finishing up this audio book.
Putting aside my frustration of this love triangle thing that was all types of weird (not in a fun way) this kinda reminds me of trash reality TV but maybe if the episodes were written by very dramatic 14 year olds. The ongoing back of forth of "Do I love him? Does he love me?" thing kinda gets old, and I found myself not really caring halfway through this book about ANYTHING going on.
You can never make me understand on why someone who has a boyfriend of 2 years go on a dating show just to make sure there are no "what ifs" or whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean or was forced to sign up by their mother after they are 18 and CLEARLY say no.

Let's also focus for a brief moment that this seems like it was written by a religious person: the heavy implications of needing to wait for sex until after marriage, all the contestants needing to be virigins to be in The Selection (WHY ALWAYS THE HUGE FOCUS ON VIRGINS?!), and the push for lots of children/big family just gives "church" vibes to me.

The drama of "the bratty" girl is overplayed and screams early 2000s plot, while so many of the characters names just felt like filler that the author was supposed to come back and adjust but didn't: Tiny, Tuesday, AMERICA. And the whole reason she was named that was because it was in regards to her "fighting" in the womb with how much she kicked and it was a representation of the country that fights the best (or whatever weird long shot the author thought to corelate), we need to stop pushing nationalism because news check America is not the greatest country we are constantly pushing down everyone's throats.

And don't even get me started on the mess that was the class system: WHY ARE WE PAYING FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE LAVISH LIVES WHEN THERE ARE WHOLE DISTRICTS THAT ARE STARVING?! Like none of this is really explained and it's all a terrible waste of resources. We get info dumps in ways of "history lessons" through the girls attending this class and just an overall lack of fully developed world building. We have rebel groups attacking almost weekly, but again not a solid reason why it's even happening.
Idk this frustrated me, give me characters that are developed that I can actually care about.
