I feel like this book had so much more potential. It started off mysterious and intriguing. I was curious about this other world, about the 'magic' and I liked the main character.
Unfortunately I feel like the plot lost steam and the ending was a bit messy. I did enjoy reading it, I simply think the end did not live up to the beginning!

The paragraph on the back of the book is only the start of this story, as it unfolds, you cannot believe how brilliantly the story is being told. It's such a powerful, magical story, at times I thought I was going to cry. I was defiantly caught off guard with the way this book unraveled, and how amazingly it was written. This story is so out of the ordinary, and I won't do the book any justice by telling you what it's about, it's one of those stories that has so much depth and mystery..I don't know where to start.
This story is narrated by Leo, a fifteen year old boy who lives in Malonia. He, and including all the boys attend a Military School, where you learn to fight more than reading or writing.
Coming home from school, Leo comes across a book in the snow. It is a simple, black, small, leather book....but there are no words on the pages. Leo takes it anyway, and when he opens it at home, words start to appear and they tell a story...and as it goes on, it becomes a fairy tale. Practically all the people in Malonia have come to believe that there is no such thing was this land called England, and that Prince Cassius no longer lives. Leo reads the book, and discovers that the story is about Prince Cassius and England. The story than switches, and starts to describe a girl, with blue eyes and a mysterious necklace....Leo doesn't know what to believe. Could these stories actually be true? And why do they mysteriously appear on the pages before his eyes? Leo deals with this mysterious book, Military school and troubles at home. The story slowly starts to unravel and what seemed like a fairy tale, could be much more.
This story is defiantly hard to explain, it has so depth. It was sad at times, but I also found myself smiling. It's one of those books were I had to stop reading to gather everything that was going on, and what has happened...but I still loved it. It was written so well that even though a lot happens, you still end up enjoying the book and wishing it never ended. This was truly a great read that left me speechless at the end...I cannot wait to read the sequel, Voices in the Dark..

I The stars in Melonia and England are the same, and people with strong enough will can pass between the boundary separating the two worlds. Leo is a teenager who finds a magic book that writes itself and tells him a story of England. Eventually the stories in the two lands connect. There are some interesting ideas here but the execution isn't great. There are multiple narrators which 'speak' in the present and the past. It's very disjointed. Leo is painfully emo and reading pages and pages of his depressing inner monologue isn't great. I have the sequel already so I will give it a chance, but I don't have high hopes.
I couldn’t get past the writing style. It was choppy and odd. Whoever edited the edition I have kept putting commas in places commas do not belong. You could tell it was written by someone young with little writing experience. Honestly, I didn’t finish it, but what I did read was pretty bad.
Fifteen-year-old Leo North lives in Malonia with his younger brother, Stirling and his grandmother. When Leo was five years old the monarchy was overthrown by the tyrant Lucien and his parents fled Malonia to save their lives.
One night on his way home, Leo finds a mysterious book. The pages of the book are blank. But soon the pages begin to fill, telling the story of two people in England, which is thought to be a fairy tale world. The pages only appear a few at a time, but Leo feels as though he already knows the story. Leo, however, has no idea how much the story will come to play in his own country of Malonia.
The Eyes of A King is a book filled with fantasy, mystery, heartache and love. Catherine Banner realistically depicts the thoughts and emotions of her teenage character, being as she is one herself. Leos’ story seems to consist of one main theme, loss. He is overcome with grief in much of the second half of the book, and is seemed as if empathy will continue to elude him. Banner cleverly intertwines the stories of Malonia and England. And readers will revel in delight as the two stories come together! The Eyes of A King looks to be the beginning of an enchanting trilogy!

I just randomly picked this book up from the public library. It didn't have a summary, but it did have a neat cover, so I decided that I'd try it out and see. It was a great decision! This is a very good book from a new author. Although there are some problems with plot development throughout the book, Banner has the ability to accurately portray emotions and develop characters well. Can't wait for her next book!
