A fun superhero graphic novel, appropriate for fans of The Incredibles.
Santat's illustrations are glorious.

Great level for young kids first getting introduced to chapter books and/or graphic novels.
My 4 year old loves this book. We often read it as part of his bedtime reading routine, though he will read many of the panel series to me instead of my reading to him. It's like a picture book but more 'grown up' feeling for him but not so grown up that I have to worry. As an added bonus, it is something that he will read independently as well -- even though he doesn't read words yet the panel art is descriptive enough for him to follow the story independently. We have re-read it many, many times!
As an adult, I appreciated and enjoyed the story as well.

This was a super cute graphic novel that I think both boys and girls would like. I think the author could have made this into a series if he wanted too to further explore all of the animals in the story. Fluffy had to be my favorite!
Super fun graphic novel by Dan Santat. A super hero's pets hope to audition to become his sidekick. Young readers will love Fluffy, Roscoe, Manny, and Shifty and surely be rooting for them!
This was very cute. It was a quick read and for once I didn't feel like it was too short. I felt like I knew the characters and there was a nice beginning, middle, and end. It even had a nice lesson about friendship, forgiveness, and working together. Good read.
Light, fluffy, fun!
Themes: Friendship, trust, strength of will, good character.

3.5 stars. I love the artwork in Sidekicks. Everything about this book stylistically is very appealing: the coloring, the expressions on the characters, the size of the text and the shape of the text balloons, the panel layout, etc. Yet the superhero storyline didn't grab me. Even though the addition of pets as superhero sidekicks is new(ish?), the basic plot and suspense arc are old and tired, and there weren't any surprises for me.
At the same time, my two sons (12 and 10, and more in the target audience), REALLY liked this book. Plus, I liked it enough to read more of Santat's stuff.
