Personally I’m not a big nonfiction reader but I’ve always opened myself to reading anything. I never had any limitations when it comes to genres I read. Aside from seeing this on a Denzel Washington movie and its gorgeous cover, one of the reasons why I got this book was because I know how informative it will be for me. A 153 page book and though it took me a while to get into it, I’m glad I read it.
The book is written in a form of a letter from a father to his son. He shares how it’s like to be a black man in the US and how he dealt with racism throughout his life. He shares real life experiences from his past, childhood, and his worries and fears as a father. I thought it was very well written and it solely speaks of the truth and deep life experiences of a black man living in America. I do recommend it especially to people who wants to understand and be informed.

The cadence of the author embodies the text like a well written poem. It begins as a reflection of what he’s experienced as a black man in a country filled with oxymorons as it steals the bodies of its inhabitants. It concludes as a love letter to a son that others may view as a cautionary tale about what living here can result in.
What do you say about a modern prophet? "I liked it"? "It was amazing"? You say--this was hard, this was deeply distressing, this was necessary, and now I have to fight to not turn from what I've read, acknowledge, and not let the next wave hide it from view. I started BtWaM many months ago, and knew I'd have to set it aside, gird myself, and read it all at once. So I did that today. And I underlined a lot, so I'd go back and pay attention again.
