This is definitely one of the definitive works of the hopeless romantic. And I loved it.
At the time I first read this, I was nineteen and I could relate to Werther a little bit too well. I don't know if I still would, but the timing of this book was just about right.

Questo libro volevo leggerlo da tantissimo tempo, ma alla fine si è rivelata un po' una delusione. Forse avrei dovuto iniziare ad approcciarmi a Goethe con altri libri. Questo l'ho trovato poco convincente, soprattutto per la mancanza delle lettere di risposta, ed essendo tutto un romanzo epistolare credo fosse necessario per comprenderlo fino in fondo. Forse lo stile così romantico, così anche lirico non fanno per me. Forse è semplicemente passato troppo tempo ed è quindi difficile leggerlo adesso. Non mi riesco a calare nell'atmosfera, non provo empatia ed anzi, trovo che sia un po' troppo lento. Peccato, perché speravo davvero mi piacesse.
Ich habe dieses Buch in der Schule gehasst. Meine Lehrerin sagte damals sie mochte es auch nicht als sie jünger war, aber irgendwann in der Uni fand sie gefallen daran. Und da ich schon des öfteren feststellen konnte, dass sich meine Meinung zu Büchern mit Zeit und Lebenssituation ändern kann, dachte ich warum lese ich es nicht noch mal, um zu sehen ob ich es immer noch schlecht finde.
Und das Ergebnis ist zwiegespalten. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich mit 18 gewürdigt habe wie gut dieses Buch geschrieben ist. Der Text fliest wunderbar und die Sprache fühlt sich nicht alt und abgedroschen an. Das Buch ist eine Mischung aus Briefen und Erzählung und das ist ebenfalls sehr gut gemacht.
Was ich mit 18 schon unerträglich fand, war Werther, und das hat sich nicht geändert. Werther ist so ein weinerlicher Jammerlappen, eine unerträgliche Dramaqueen! Sein ganzer character ist sowas von nervig und sein Leben so belanglos und seine Obsession mit Lotte, einer vergebenen Frau würde man heute unter das Thema 'Love Triangle' ablegen! Unerträglich!
Ich bin ziemlich stolz, dass ich es erneut gelesen habe, nur um sagen zu können, ich kann es immer noch nicht leiden. ich lese nicht wirklich gerne über Hauptcharaktere die mich nerven und ich unerträglich finde!

Had to read this for my Overiview of German Literature class. Very interesting book, I love epistolary novels. I like the dimension and flaws of Wether's character, and It was fascinating to follow his musings. Very dramatic
Gawd damn, I loath love stories but the writing was excellent. It’s near impossible not to put yourself in the character’s shoes. You understand everything. I wish I could read it in its original language. I bet it’s even more amazing. I don’t like rereading books but this one, I just might!
A text epistolary by form, a fictional gathered collection of items by a supposed friend, detailing the protagonist's demise. As you can guess by the title, it is a sorrowful book in tone. However, there is much to enjoy in terms of the style, the format and the questions of reliability etc.
I don't know if it was the translation I read, but some parts felt off. It's such a tragic story and I wish I was fluent in German to really feel the punch of this novel.
