So totally not my usual thing, but I really enjoyed it! The level of detail around the monastery was super informative and I really enjoyed seeing all these ancient theological discussion— today, no priest would ever seriously make the argument that laughter is sinful because Jesus never laughed in the Bible, but that was a huge issue to these monks. I love love loved the ending and the thematic richness this book ended up having! This edition is also gorgeous, well formatted, and pleasing to hold… I’m gonna go replay Pentiment now.

The writing style is not for me, it is long winded and unnecessarily descriptive. It was a beast to even read 40 pages. I decided to watch the movie instead and can say with confidence I don't think I would have enjoyed this book very much regardless.
slow-paced

If there had been one less chapter about the intricacies of 13th Papal politics, I would have rated this book 5 stars. Eco's book is simultaneously a Sherlockian murder mystery set in an abbey and also an analysis of Christian symbolism and theological debate. I came into the novel expecting a 50/50 split between the two and was surprised to see how much of the book is devoted to debate, maybe 65%? Weaver's translation of Eco's Italian is dense and it can be easy to get lost in the discussions of religious minutia but the book is so cleverly constructed and thematically rich that it only lost 0.5 stars for me.
