Wow! This little book is amazing. Brother Lawrence was in a constant state of practicing the presence of God. Always attentive to the fact that God's presence was with him, whatever he was doing, whatever circumstance. Basically in continual conversation with and acknowledgement of God. If I could only be so focused a fraction of the time that he was...life would be so much more rewarding...the perspective of what is truly important would be much more prevalent...and my actions, behavior and attitude would surely be more Christ-like and loving.

I was taken by surprise by the first section of the book, which is more a summary and description of Brother Lawrence’s sayings than his actual words, and I liked the book better when I got to the letters, but I still found all of it to be at once challenging as well as comforting. Brother Lawrence’s descriptions of finding God in everything, and always putting God first, can seem impossible or naïve (though desirable), but he uses his own life to show how it can be done and encourages the reader not to give up or settle for anything less.

Knowing that Brother Lawrence lived in the 1600s, I’m struck by how neat it is that what He learned about God 400 years ago is still applicable to us today.

About Brother Lawrence: “He fixed his gaze on God alone, the Goal of his race, and sped along towards Him by daily acts of meekness and righteousness and love.” Page 61

I will return to this little book often to remind myself of the simplicity of entering into the Presence of God.

This book is tiny (38 pages!) but SO MIGHTY. Wow wow wow. (When Hannah Brencher recommends a book and then your pastor references it the next Sunday, you grab it and devour it ASAP.) I want to read this one weekly (especially the second half of letters from Brother Lawrence) — such rich and meaningful thoughts about how to truly, deeply, and consistently seek and find God. I could have underlined this whole book, it’s just that good.
