If I could go back and reread this series for the first time, I would read Dark Skies first, Dark Shores second, and then Gilded Serpent. That being said, this book contributes to the worldbuilding and characterization of interpersonal relationships wonderfully. I LOVE when characters are in a sticky situation together, and Boy Howdy are these people messy. (If you've read The Red Queen series and enjoyed all the fucked up family/lover/friend dynamics, I HIGHLY recommend this series).
