This book is just glowing with love - for the community it portrays, the relationship dynamics it explores, and most of all, the original iconic novel that it’s based on. I enjoyed this tremendously and it was so amazing to get to the acknowledgment section and see so many of my favorite people mentioned <3

I don’t know if it’s because I know the original story so well and I’ve seen so many different iterations of it, but this particular Pride and Prejudice retelling really seemed to drag, as far as pace went. It was fun to see some of the characters shown in new and more modern ways. But the pace made the overall story fall a little flat for me. (It was a selection for my book club. Had it not been, I probably would have DNF’d it.)

Just too freaking slow. Cool concept, but I kept waiting for something to happen.

Pride and Prejudice, but make it Chinatown. And I loved the Chinatown setting — all of the Canal Street grittiness, the rats and the smell and the heaps of trash waiting on the sidewalks. Elizabeth being recast as a community organizer against Darcy’s real estate investor megabucks was a nice touch, and I loved seeing him at Pemberly, his Boston-based community organization serving the youths. The story was so faithful to the original in a way that made a longtime fan like me really happy, but also felt fresh with the vibrant setting and Chinese American flavor. Absolutely loved it.
