I enjoy this series less with each book. It had a slow difficult start and initially I was caught off guard and a bit put off by Whoopi as the narrator. Eventually I found her cadence agreeable and even enjoyable. I like the character Bruce and his fictional small town bookstore as unbelievable and unrelatable as he is. Here, he's a main character and a side character who is always so conveniently powerful in the literary world that top authors do as he says including Insurance fraud. Mercer is the worst character by far. She falls so flat, never has any development and always finds success without much real effort. Her new husband was unnecessary. Lovely was an interesting character and the back story of Dark Isle is the sort of thing I'd enjoy reading as non-fiction and historical fiction but I had a hard time connecting with it here, probably due to the bouncing around from perspective to perspective and the shallow glimpses we were given to the backstory. The ending was total crap. There is 90% of the book setting the scene including unnecessary details about painting Mercers cottage, and other trivial matters (which would have been fine if the ending wasn't so damn abrupt) yet the ending was like, BTW this happened, then this, then this without much description, no drama, no fanfare.
FWIW, the outcome is not at all what would have happened in a real FL courtroom but it's fiction so I'll allow the happy ending on that account. Overall I just wish there was more depth and complexity to these characters

How can you not like a book filled with quirky, interesting characters? Every character was well defined and had a purpose in the story. The story was filled with love, care, gratitude, and help for others. It was what I needed to read at the moment.
This felt like a diary with mindless entries not in anyway related to the plot.
