I have been anticipating the next book in this series for a few years. After two entertaining stories, I was salivating for Grisham to drop another one on us.

I am a little disappointed. The first two had all the mystery and intrigue, mixed in with some great, fun characters. This one was a much darker mood, not as entertaining as the first two books. The darker mood would usually be okay, but that's not what has made this series up to this point.

I will say I was engaged. The historical aspect of the story was very intriguing. You know who you are rooting for, and you don't expect anything less than what you want by the end of the book.

I think my expectations versus what I got let me down some. And that is okay. If a fourth book comes along, I will most definitely read it. Grisham seems to always give me a form of entertainment most authors don't.

I gave it a 4 because it was so nice to be back on a restored Camino Island, and back to Bay Books and lunches along the beach. But the character of Lovely was a bit too saintly, and there wasn't much overall tension over the island's fate, and even the previously established characters were not fleshed out. (WHY did Mercer get married as she didn't seem to care that much about her husband Thomas.) The "inner" story about the slaves travelling from Africa to Dark Isle was good.

Apparently, picking this book up from the 7-day "express read" table in my library I stumbled on the third book of a trilogy.  But it didn't matter -- it was readable, classic Grisham.  And -- like his character who writes best-sellers that can be read in a day -- Grisham goes down fast and satisfyingly.  I like thee characters enough that I'll probably go back and look for #1 and #2.

John Grisham's third book in the Camino Island series.

The characters return for another adventure, this one involving a legal battle over ownership and writing a non-fiction book regarding an island off the coast of Georgia, once home to runaway slaves.

Grisham again tells a compelling, page turning story if not deep or complex.

This should have been an interesting story but it just wasn't. Very slow paced and no character or plot development.
