I’ll keep this review short because I don’t want to give spoilers but it was a nice whodunnit.
I removed some points because I wasn’t able to imagine the depth of some characters (I had a hard time with the relationship with
Juan
) and because the before/now rhythm got a bit long at some point

Note: I was extremely torn by her story and moved by the FMC. I hope it’s not offending to say
it’s clear as day that she’s on the spectrum and it hurts so much to see her traumatized for that

Book: The Mystery Guest
Author: Nita Prose
Rating: 5/5 stars

The Mystery Guest returns us to the wonderful world of Molly the Maid and does so in a way that is just as mysterious and compelling as the first novel!
It is the second book in The Maid series, and I received it from Tandem Collective Global and Penguin Books Canada in order to take part in a buddy read that they hosted!

The story takes place four years after the events of The Maid and is told in the now 29-year-old Molly Gray’s perspective. Molly has been promoted to the esteemed position of Head Maid at the Regency Grand Hotel since last following along with her adventure in the first book. She has been sticking to her daily routine while working with other hotel employees to renovate and officially open the Grand Tearoom for guests of the hotel to enjoy.
At the beginning of the book, the tearoom is set for hosting its first event for world-renowned mystery author J.D. Grimthorpe. He specially selected the Regency Grand for his first public event in years - and a big announcement is promised to those who attend.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, the event takes a drastic and unfortunate turn when J.D. Grimthorpe takes a sip of his tea and ends up dropping dead on the tearoom floor.
There is now more than one mystery to solve - as Molly works with her colleagues to not only figure out what happened to J.D. Grimthorpe - but to also uncover the mystery of what the announcement he was going to make was.

The story is full of Molly’s wonderful recalls to Gran’s lessons, and I enjoyed that the story was told through flashbacks as well as through current events from the first-person perspective of Molly. By having been written like this, the story gave further insight into Molly and Gran’s relationship, events that happened in Molly’s childhood that shaped the way she is, and delved into the mystery of who J.D. Grimthorpe was and how that related to the mysteries at hand.

I have really been enjoying the series so far and can definitely say that The Mystery Guest was my favourite of the first two books! The twists, turns, and tale that was tied together nicely in the end were fun to follow and kept me guessing until the very end.

Thank you to Penguin Books Canada and Tandem Collective Global for the copy of The Mystery Guest and for hosting the buddy read!

Molly was so great in this book. It’s four years after the first, and she’s grown quite a spine. Her sass and spitfire energy were so fun

We get a lot more of her past in this one, with alternating chapters taking place in her childhood, and Gran is much more present throughout as a result

I wish there was more Juan Manuel, but the moments that were there were so sweet

Fast easy read. A mystery and some hardship, but I would still call this a light hearted book. I did not read “The Maid” and still enjoyed this book very much. Love Molly!

I was looking for a cozy mystery, and this book delivered! I wanted something easy to read but not too intense. That said, I enjoyed the first book more. This one felt a bit too perfect, and the dialogue between the characters didn’t feel very realistic. Overall, it was okay
