First story was better than the second imo.

Re-read because it's been a looooong time and my cousin Rod was talking about it last week. Fantastic writing; fantastic art. (Though the sequel, Master of the Future, wasn't really my thing though.)

This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The plot of the first half (the true Gotham by Gaslight) seemed rushed and clunky with some forced references. But the artwork was amazing (I'm a Mignola fanboy, so of course I have this opinion). Mignola's style lends itself well to the dark and gritty tale, especially in the darkness at the end of the story.

Conversely, the story and plot of the Master of the Future portion of the book was much better. It felt like it was more thought out and had an original villain. (Maybe this is the difference between a 48-page and a 64-page one-shot.) But, the artwork was not as engaging. Not to knock on Barreto's work. It's incredibly detailed and arguably matches the setting more than Mignola's, but it's not as unique.

So we have one so-so arc with great artwork, and a better arc with decent artwork. It all comes together for a unique take on what Batman might be like 100 years in the past.

I really liked the idea of this story, but it felt too short and rushed. Frankly, the ending was predictable.

Holds up great from 1989, even on the third or fourth read. Truly a DC/Batman masterpiece that everybody needs to read. Plus, Mignola. Come on.

Interesting concept- I love both Batman and the 19th century, so I was excited to read this. I really enjoyed the first story, with Jack the Ripper, but the second fell flat for me. If I rated them separately, I would probably give the first story about 4 stars, and the second about 2 stars.

I absolutely loved the art and the two stories in this volume. The adventures were interesting and exciting. I really enjoyed seeing Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Victorian era. I absolutely must read more!

2.5 Victorian Batman isn't for me.
