“When somebody dies, you forget they're an asshole.”
I really wanted to love this book. But it was a chore.
It's really hard to love a book when the protagonist is just so unlikable.
I'm sorry, but Andy SUCKS. I mean, I get that you don't want your character to be a "Mary Sue", but this was just sad. She was so weak and honestly didn't have a ton of growth.
The story was good, and all the stuff with younger Jane was good. Unfortunately doesn't forgive the protagonist sucking.
**SPOILER**
The only part that really stood out to me was the ending scene with Jane and the piano in the jail. That was beautiful. And I was pretty heartbroken to learn that they left it out of the Netflix series.
I couldn't finish the Netflix series because the actress was just reminding me how awful Andy is.

You could cut out half the book and the story wouldn’t change. I enjoy Karin Slaughter books but this one was a miss. It’s way too long with background that doesn’t matter. The main character, Andy, was honestly one of the most annoying characters. She can’t form full sentences. She makes awful decisions, and honestly, she is just dumb. I should have DNF this one but I kept hoping it would get better

3 stars = Okay but by far not my favourite from Karin.
This book started out fast paced and a real page turner. The story of a daughter, Andrea, seeing her mother, Laura, confront a shooter in a diner. Andrea is stunned at her mother’s reaction to protect her. Who was Laura really? Andrea begins to wonder who on earth her mother really is.
I found myself beginning to lose interest in the book as we got into Laura’s back story. I found it slow paced and a little unbelievable.

I literally couldn’t put this down and even knowing the backstory and where the plot was going (having read girl, forgotten first) it was still enthralling af. I feel my heart beating from how exciting even the final page was. Karin Slaughter is 4/4 for me.

What I Liked
* Complex storytelling that adds a lot of layers not just to the plot but more so, to the characters as well.
* I always love a story about a mother-daughter relationship and putting it in a thriller story makes it a lot better
* The narration on the back story of some characters made me understand their motives better however, some characters were not just lovable.
What I did. not Liked
* The novel could have been shorter. It felt like there were fillers and had they been removed, the story would have remained the same.
* The ending was not as explosive as her other work that made me fall in love with Karin's writing (pretty girls)
