Pieces of Her
3 Stars
Karin Slaughter's Grant County and Will Trent series are excellent with intense and suspenseful plots as well as compelling if not always likeable characters. Unfortunately, Pieces of Her is not a good example of Slaughter's writing.
While the story begins with a bang, and the first few chapters are mesmerizing, the pacing slows toward the middle and the dual timeline only exacerbates the problem.
In the present-day timeline, the reader must slog through repetitive descriptions of the heroine's internal musings and angst as well as overly descriptive passages on the surrounding scenery. The sections set in the past provide necessary background information, but they are too long, and it is difficult to identify with the characters.
The story does ultimately pick up again, and the climax and resolution are satisfying overall. That said, the romance reader in me is disappointed in the lack of development of Andy and relationship as there is definite potential there.
Overall, this is entertaining enough and I look forward to seeing how it translates to the screen.

This was a wild read. Definitely read trigger warnings before reading as there are parts that are very intense.
Overall, I thought this was an awesome suspenseful thriller delving into family secrets between a mother and daughter.
I wouldn’t call this a mystery necessarily, though there were a lot of mysteries throughout the book.

Great writing, love this author, but wasn’t grabbed by the story line.
Don’t read this out of order! I read #2 first and I feel this would have been better if I didn’t already know certain pieces of information!
fast-paced
I’ve read only one other book by Slaughter. Pretty Girls was so dark but yet so engrossing. I thought that this book was just as good. I can’t believe it took me so long to read this one. It’s been on my shelf for years. Shame on me.
I was initially drawn into the book by the premise. It hooks the reader immediately and then slowly unravels the history of how these things came to be. The dual storylines kept me engaged throughout which is no easy feat when reading a book that’s over 400 pages. I usually find places in the plot where it slows down to a crawl but I didn’t feel that way while devouring this story. I was so excited to see that there is another book with this main character, Andrea.
I will be reading that one soon!
For a book the length of half the Bible you’d think this would’ve been as good as the movie
