This is the story of Andrea and Laura. Andrea thought she knew everything about her mother, Laura. That is until one day a shooting at their local mall where Laura takes down the suspect that has Andrea realizing she didn't know her mother at all. This shooting leads Andrea down a path into her mother's past that she finds unbelievable. In the end, Andrea learns how tough her mother really is, and learns that she can also stand on her own two feet.

This book was okay. I liked the back story of Laura and how she became the person she is now. Andrea (Andy) on the other hand was horrible. Never liked her character. Borded on hating her. I know the author wrote her to be that way on purpose, but it was really too much. I could never route for her because she was so awful.

I am on the fence to recommend this one. Out of the gate Andy drove me crazy that I almost didn't finish the book. However, the backstory parts of this do make finishing the book worth it. So......maybe? I am going to watch the Netflix show and maybe that will pull it all together.

Karin did what Karin does. This book was not as dark* as some of her other books.

*not as dark was still dark

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ but rounded up. It was an alright book. The fact that they said UT didn’t have a football team almost made me DNF this book.

The two story lines were very predictable, there was no huge twist that you can’t see coming. The characters are very well developed and I didn’t appreciate that the diversity of POC characters were just there to point out other characters racism. It was very icky. Hopefully in the sequel that gets better.

I don’t think I would recommend this though.

I love Karin Slaughter.
Most of her books I've read have been phenomenal.
This one is a dud.
I hated the protagonist. Most of the other characters felt superficial.
It wasn't even that thrilling or exciting. Even the reveals were meh.

OMG, this book was AMAZING! Loved it so much!

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea Cooper is celebrating her birthday at a restaurant with her mother, Laura, when a gunman enters and starts shooting people. Andrea is shocked when Laura confronts the gunman and ends the conflict. Full of questions her mother refuses to answer and followed quickly by another shocking event, Andrea finds herself on the run at Laura's urgent request. Now she's on a quest to uncover her mother's secrets... completely unaware of how dangerous those secrets may be.

Pieces of Her is a stunning piece of work, full of suspense and thrills. The story is told in the present (mainly from Andrea's point of view), as well as having flashback chapters of events that happened in the past. The mystery of Laura's past is gradually revealed with tantalizing tidbits that gave just enough information to allow the reader's imagination to run wild. I came up with hundreds of theories about what it all meant, only to discover I was wrong each time.

The truth about Laura, once revealed, was well worth the wait. The only question remaining, for me, was how she ended up in Belle Isle—another reveal that I found to be just as satisfying.

I did wish there was more information about a couple of characters from Laura's past, but this was just me wanting to know more about them, rather than a need for it story-wise. (You know what I'm talking about here, readers: we always want to know more!)

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent reading this fantastic book. The characters were vivid, the settings were so well-described I felt as if I was there, and the mystery of Laura is one that I won't soon forget. This book was absolutely amazing.

In preparing to write this review, I was stunned to realize this is the first time I've read a book written by Karin Slaughter. I don't know how I managed to miss out on reading her books before now, but I'll be keeping an eye out for them from now on!

If you love reading suspenseful thrillers, you need to read this book!

I received an advance reading copy of this book courtesy of William Morrow.

This is an extremely ambitious stand-alone crime thriller by Slaughter.  There is definitely a lot to like here, such as mysterious events and even more mysterious characters.  The problem with the novel is that all that mystery could have unfolded in a rather complex and satisfying manner.  This despite, the mystery is explained in minute detail from around the halfway mark of the novel and the novel just keeps losing pace, and frankly my interest.  The final reveal is also a bit of an afterthought.  Not bad but not great.
