I have liked other Karin slaughter books, the Good Daughter and Pretty Girls were great! Gritty and dark, with well developed and interesting characters. So I started looking for other books she had written, and I actually read the second book in this series first, “Girl Forgotten”. While I was reading that book, I had some issues with Andrea as a character. It made me feel like clearly this author has never met or spoken to someone born in the 80’s, and that trend continued here in Pieces of Her. Do you really expect me to believe that an elder millennial, born in 1987, is clueless about cars having manual crank windows…”rolly things”… really? Andrea is so incredibly frustrating, particularly her lack of functional communication skills. As one other reviewer commented, I also found myself yelling “Just say something!! Anything!!”, multiple times throughout this book. This woman is supposed to be a university graduate, educated and working as a police dispatcher… she can’t function during an emergency situation!? That’s her job!? She doesn’t know how to use a paper map? Or think that gee maybe I could try a library for information? It really detracts from the story when your main character is incongruously stupid… I am just disappointed, I barely made it through Girl Forgotten, and only did so because of the other characters. Pieces of Her has been torture to get through, how it got picked up to be a Netflix series, I’ll never understand.
Listened to this one. Kathleen Early is the narrator and did a great job. This is one of those books that I enjoyed while listening, but liked it less when I had a chance to think back on the plot holes.

I don’t paste reviews, usually. However, in this case, I feel like I should. It was slow at first. I thought to myself, this is going to be a read it through to the end and not enjoy it kind of thing. But, wow, I got swept up. The psychology of it, the manipulation. Karen Slaughter nailed it. She nailed it! Why do we love manipulators? It made me want to shake her daughter, made me want to shake the mother, made me want to say, “wake up!” If you like books that make you think wtf, this is a good wtf book. I could put it down for the first half, I couldn’t for the last half. It’s a mind twister, if you can follow the twists. I did, can you?

I honestly would have given this book 5 stars if one of the main characters wasn’t so frustrating to follow her thought processes and actions. But loved the storyline!
