Heart-breaking, brutal, and oh so beautiful, this meticulously-crafted graphic novel captures the horrifying events of Interview with the Vampire through Claudia's eyes. Through her perspective, we see the arrogance of Lestat, the tenderness of Louis, and the madness of one young girl unable to become a woman.
At the heart of this story is Claudia's transformation as she grows through the decades mentally maturing, but never physically. Lestat and Louis take on the roles of her "fathers" at first, but Claudia's attachment to Louis is far more than it seems. Throughout her story, her feelings for him morph into that of a woman begging to be loved, even as she searches for more of her vampire kind.
I loved the tension inherent in Claudia's lying on the cusp of womanhood, but never quite achieving it. Her and Louis' gentle relationship is repeatedly put through the test until ultimately it faces its shocking climax.
The illustrations really made the story come to life. They were lush and gorgeous, particularly the men. Emotion is portrayed exquisitely through their facial expressions and the sepia tone added to the archaic feel. I've never seen the original film or read the book, so as I was reading, I wasn't prepared for anything. Consequently, I was greatly affected by the end, so much so, that it even brought me to tears. That's just good writing.
If you've never read Anne Rice (up until this point, I'd only read Vittorio the Vampire), I would say this is an excellent way to introduce yourself to her world. It's disturbing, it's devastating, but it's downright incredible.

I read this while my dad was in the hospital after a heart attack, so it already has a weightier meaning to me. The illustrations are beautiful. I think I will enjoy this even more when I gain more context by reading the original work. I am adding this to my "reread" list so I can give a more accurate review at a later date.

Not only is the art style absolutely stunning, this truly captures Claudia and her journey throughout Interview with the Vampire.
This can be read alone, as a companion piece or after the original book.
The visuals of small, angelic Claudia, who can come across as very adult in the original story, killing and scheming throughout this graphic novel truly makes the juxtaposition of her character shine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I found it more enjoyable than its source material (although, I do enjoy that as well), as it does skim over the unimportant parts of Louis story telling, using the art to create those details without going into as much detail.
