DNF. New age stream of consciousness rambling full of nonsense. This was recommended as the best reference for beginning tarot and I couldn't disagree more. I'm glad I didn't waste much time reading someone's interpretations instead of useful information.

2 stars because I did learn some interesting history.

It's easy to see why this book is so popular. The style is really accessible and I found the description of the tarot cards and their relationships really intriguing. The only difficulties I had with the book stem from my difficulties with esoteric and self-help philosophies in general, and so I couldn't get on board with the claims in the final chapters of the book on what tarot readings can achieve. But as someone interested in tarot as a symbol system and modern spiritual phenomenon, this book still had much to offer.

I loved the section on the Major Arcana.

For the Minor Arcana the author comments after her walkthrough of all suites on how many authors neglect to cover the Minor Arcana properly in their books. I found it ironic to read this after thinking that I wish she had covered the Minors in as much depth as she did the Majors. Some cards had very little on symbolism or meanings.

The last part on spreads didn’t capture my attention. I did like the exploration on meditating into cards though.

If you’re new to Tarot or need a refresher, I think you’ll find what you’re looking for in this book!

This is a good overview of how to approach the tarot. I appreciate the depth it goes into and how Pollack ties things together. Overall very helpful in understanding how the tarot’s cards relate to each other and outside concepts
informative mysterious medium-paced

Very information heavy and hard to focus on. Will have to try again with the audiobook.
informative inspiring medium-paced

A comprehensive book about tarot and the meaning of the cards. Probably the best book about tarot that I’ve ever read. The detail is immaculate. The writing is captivating. I learned so much from it. I discovered it because Rachel Pollack is a legend. Anyone who is interested in tarot should read it.
