Kinda Meh

While I love Batman and Superman stories, this one just kinda felt meh. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't something memorable. The reason why I dislike it is the reason for the conflict - lack of communication. It has a lot of wasted potential unfortunately. One thing I really love about it though is the artwork! It's amazing.

A sequel to The Batman Who Laughs which adds Superman and the Justice League to the mix. One of the previous book's strong parts was that it was just the Batmen at odds against each other. There is a good dynamic between Clark & Bruce, but it has a different feel than previous books. Onto the Infected.

Read via DC Universe Infinite.

I'm reading this as part of The Batman Who Laughs Chronology. The series started with the [b:Dark Nights: Metal|36268449|Dark Nights Metal|Scott Snyder|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1516032051l/36268449._SY75_.jpg|57924142] books, which were scattered and disappointing, followed by a [b:Justice League, Volume. 2: Graveyard of Gods|40997700|Justice League, Volume. 2 Graveyard of Gods|Scott Snyder|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1556662742l/40997700._SY75_.jpg|63966860] book which was practically detached from the story, and entirely uninteresting, and then spinning into [b:The Batman Who Laughs|44132735|The Batman Who Laughs|Scott Snyder|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1565715046l/44132735._SX50_.jpg|68626442] which was excellent. It wa sort of refreshing to get to this volume which is ... ok.

The storytelling is fine. The plot points are stupid, but comic book stupid not bad writing stupid, and the art is above average. I was never fully invested in this story but I never had the desire to put it down. But I read it a week ago, and now can't really remember anything other than how it picked up the thread of The Man Who Laughs and tossed Superman back in the mix. Ehhh.

If you like DC books, this one is better than most of its recent peers. And it's a fine chapter in The Man Who Laughs saga, but otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to pick this up.

Wow, did the Batman who laughs plot go on too long. I think the story was ok, but I just found the villain really boring. "What if Batman was evil?" Has never been a story that interest me, so I'm not surprised I bounce off that plot quick.

They’ve once again rebooted Batman/Superman, but it’s still alternate universe bad guys all the way down. This was better than the previous incarnation from a few years ago, but that’s hardly saying much. The good stuff Williamson brings here is that Batman and Superman do actually trust each other, and they both lose repeatedly when their plans go south. Aside from that it doesn’t feel like there will be any real changes here. Once again the art is spectacular. It’d be nice if David Marquez weren’t wasted on these inconsequential stories. It’d be cool if Superman were really allowed to cut loose for a change. Even in Injustice he’s always holding back.

It *is* interesting how so many of these DC books over the past few years — most of them written and published well before 2020 — are all about disease. DCeased, Earth 2, Batman/Superman, Action Comics… it’s like they sensed something was coming.
