A different type of story for this series. This one is smaller, with most of the action focussing on Uhtred and a small group of companions rather than Uhtred and a small or large army.

The tension was maintained well across the book, with the middle third being a near constant chase and Uhtred's final climactic fight is well done and a good call back to the first book in the series and a fight which was never finished.

The character deaths at the end feel too convenient and as with many character deaths in the series, happen off screen.

Uhtred keeps getting older but he keeps getting dragged into wars to protect England, which is something he doesn't even necessarily want to exist.

The series is kind of repetitive and kind of dumb but it's also just so much fun. It's intoxicating to follow Uhtred around, watch him make mistakes, watch him come through in the end. And this one was no different.

Uhtred's son, Uhtred, largely disappeared from the narrative a few books ago and I find that too bad. There's a narrowing cast of characters, which makes sense. Most of the people Uhtred has known have died and so his view of the world keeps getting smaller as everyone keeps dying.

Which is an interesting aspect to the series that I don't see commented upon.
