Directly after I finished “The Wolf King” in one day, I dove right into “The Night Prince” wanting to know the answers to questions raised from the first volume of this new series. It turns out that either my sense of prescience has improved or the choices made by the author were somewhat predictable. Either way, it did not diminish my enjoyment of Palphreyman’s latest story in the least.
As with the first volume of this series, the writing is fairly straightforward with the entirety told from the POV of the MMC, Aurora (or Rory). Although this limits our exploration of The Northlands and its characters, it did elevate the sense of mystery about Rory’s backstory and her origins. It also allowed us to learn about the politics of the land and of being a wolf at the same time as she did. That sense of coming into her own and fighting for her right to make her own choices as a woman who was raised to meekly follow is what elevated this book (IMHO) from just another werewolf romantasy where the alpha chooses and the FMC simply accepts to an FMC that is really interesting.
Of course, it didn’t hurt that there were two MMCs and a decidedly elevated level of spice (🌶️🌶️🌶️) in this instalment but it was well done in that it was a part of the story and not completely gratuitous. As for the tropes, it touches on several well worn ones but we are still left in the dark as to how they will pan out until the end.(Sort of. Can’t say more without a spoiler…)
As with the first book, the plot had a few twists but this time, a few were a surprise but some I predicted. However this was still a good escapist read that had a bit more depth to it as is often the case with so many series where the first one is good but not as much as the second and the author is in good company (eg ACOTAR, The Plated Prisoner).
I am a little bit frustrated that I now have yet another cliffhanger in my head but I will admit that this one is worth the book hangover.

I have too many feelings about this. Not ready to process. I hate it for my kilt guy. Hoping this turns into a why choose. lol
