I enjoyed it, and I’m glad I read it, but I didn’t love it. I think it would have been better enjoyed as a performance. It felt slow to read despite moving pretty quickly.
I liked a lot of the sassy monologues, although I think I needed more background info to appreciate some of the references. It’s a great way to study the cost of pride and humility though.

For me, the reading is elevated knowing the order these works were originally written in and the order they are presented in are different. You can see how Sophocles changed as a writer over time and, in my opinion, see what characters the writer relates to more based on his age.

My first time reading the Oedipus tragedy in full, this is a great edition and translation. Fitzgerald remains my go-to for Ancient Greek works.
Read largely at Fuel Pump and Garden Grove. Finished at Garden Grove a couple weeks prior to its permanent closure.

1. Oedipus Rex: 5 stars. I read this senior year in English and remember enjoying it. Re-reading after 6 years, yes, I still really like it. Here's some shit I posted in 2014: "We should make 'Just leave me on a mountain. #Oedipus' a thing. Anyone who has Woodford would understand ;D" Ah. 17 year-old me.
Now to be a real #Adult and read the whole trilogy.
2. Oedipus at Colonus: 4 stars.
3. Antigone: 4 stars. Greek plays are just so . . . dramatic (pun intended). Can't get away with writing about incest and vengeful gods much these days without some looks. What a shame.

read these for acting research and while i really enjoyed them i will say they felt really repetitive. oedipus at colonus was the only one i hadn’t read and lowkey it was my favorite so there’s that??? for sure will end up reading these again!
So my review will be brief. Picking this up I was quite a bit intimidated, three ancient Greek plays in English translation?
I nearly expected not to understand anything at all or barely managing to follow the story. I worried in vain.
These plays are an excellent look at the nature of humanity, the hypocrisy of us and the fact that we all have our good sides and our bad.
I know I will not be ending my live affair with Antigone anytime soon.😂
“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride. “
