I really liked this story! It was a lot more intriguing than I had anticipated it would be.
I wish the story was longer, but perhaps that would have ruined its charm. Still, this concept felt like it could have become a wonderful full-length novel instead of a novella.
I came into this story with a pre-existing narrative in my head about Jekyll and Hyde (which came from adaptations and such) that this tale was about someone with a split personality. I like the actual twist so much better than this, and so I was pleasantly surprised as I kept reading. It's interesting to read this mysterious meditation on identity and morality, and the allegory for substance abuse was also clever.
I don't have much else to say; I'm just very pleased with all that I got out of this story!

I read this years ago, and I liked it just as well the second time around.
It's always wild to read the source material of an everyday reference—to think that there was a world without "Jekyll and Hyde" as a go-to sleight, observation, or dissection for someone with an exceedingly dual nature (to put it politely). This was fun and straightforward. I'm sure it would've been twisty fun a century ago. Love the idea that Stevenson, and ultimately Jekyll, couldn't shake the odd, complex, and even paradoxical nature of human beings. How can we be so good to each other when we can be so evil to one another? It's a simple question, but this really puts forth how we can break down the madness and glory of our intellect as well as the indulgence and sweetness of our pleasures. Wild times to be literally anyone on Earth.
