While it is the very first Jane Austen book I read completely, I already got the impression it is her best display of society. It deals a lot with arranging connections and nobody ever seems to just be like "Let's marry, we love each other" they are all more like: "Well we like each other but before we are telling anyone we must think about what effects it has on our distant relatives son wich we have never seen, but who certainly must be thought of!" while still keeping it in a humorous atmosphere in a very special, entertaining wayl.
What I loved about this book was the fact that Emma really had a lot of faults and made a lot of mistakes.
Especially the parts concerning poor Harriet who (since being so very open hearted and minded) were soon becoming my favorites. I believe that she is the person through which we get to know Emmas character best, since hers are the moments when Emma really feels the consequences of her actions, when she acts from nothing but good will for her friend but learns that even good intentions could end up ruining someones happiness.
I loved Emma especially through having so very perfect characters in everyone being so imperfect, having a great many qualities and just as great faults, while even the annoying Miss Bates is, in her own way, just a very caring person. The couples in this book all seem to be happy just because of their flaws (as an example, Isabella and John, while Isabella has a very happy temper, though not being the brightest in mind, manages to compensate all her husbands flaws by just not noticing his often occurring flaws and always is a bright addition to his temper) which is a very charming message to the readers in my opinion.
But I would lie if I said there weren't times when I found the book very boring, since: longing to get more story, the reader is so often thrown into every day informations from the story (as an example every information about James, Hannah or Mr Perry) that there definitely were parts when I wished them all to just become air and make place for the actual story I was waiting for.
What was making the book very enjoyable for me, even through those times, was Jane Austens very charming style of writing, which is -I believe- just wonderful to read.

I enjoy Jane Austen’s books. I love that time period, it draws me in for some reason. I did not especially enjoy Emma as much as other books that she has written, however. Emma was insufferable, which she was meant to be. She never changed. She remained selfish to the end – but perhaps that is realistic. Some people don’t really change. She received everything she wanted but to no credit to herself. She was perfectly happy to throw her friend Harriet under the bus despite feeling bad about it – it simply had to be done.
I think Mr. Knightly loved her for her faults, and I do love his character. He was probably the saving grace of the book, the one character I didn't find annoying and self-obsessed. Mr. Woodhouse was awfully boorish and I don’t think if he were real I could stand to be around him for more than a few minutes. Second that thought for poor Miss Bates and Mrs. Elton.
While the people in the book were very grating I did enjoy it. It was not by any means the greatest book I've read lately, and I already knew the story very well (the movie adaptation is incredibly close in its depiction, if not lacking in good direction), but I did still like it.
