I could go on and on about how much I hate it but to put it simply: the only redeeming factor of the entire book is that Cyra develops more relationships but it is ruined by the fact that the most important one became extremely toxic. They both kind of shut down out of nowhere, the author not only completely changing Akos as a character but abandoning his growth of moving past only having one goal in life, that being to save Eijeh and him reverting back to being completely consumed by his fate. She also turned Cyra into being completely reliant on him and his presence and struggling to go on when he left. Though, that was supposed to be her growth throughout the book, it seemed unnecessary and out of character. Instead of sticking with it through to the end of the book, though, she abandoned all of the character changes and “all was forgiven”. It just wasn’t right. Also, no matter what happened I couldn’t bring myself to like Isea. It was very hard to empathize with her. And, finally, don’t get me started on the “one season later” bs. Reading those words hurt. The ending was supposed to be “happy” but it doesn’t quite feel right with the rest of the story. That time jump made it so much more confusing.

First off Veronica Roth is an amazing author and she explains all the foreign cultures and ideas so well. I felt like I understood everything that happened in the book.
All of my favorite characters were back and better than ever. Cyra and Akos are so cute but also Cisi and Isae (ughhhh I am in love with love). I love every character and Roth does such a great job of making all the characters individual yet connecting them all in ways known and not known to us.
This book surprised me from the first line. I didn't think a book could create more questions then the Carve of The Mark did, but this book answered them all and I was pleasantly surprised by every moment in this book. And, the amount of new things I learned about the characters is crazy. (The twists and turns I was on a emotional roller-coaster) The things I thought I knew about the characters but really didn't........ Roth surprised me. Oh and to make things even better it ended happily unlike some of the other amazing Roth works. (I am not saying I'm still sour about Allegiant, I'm implying it).
So yes, I would recommend this series, the only thing I will caution you on is the cultural stuff. The book can be hard to grasp because of all the different things you have to learn about the planets . I really was still a little confused on cultures and the currents and the powers, of the people but I understood it enough to grasp the story and understand how the current works. Two and a half stars for the second book of this series.
Tbh, I really enjoyed the first one even though it got ripped apart from many people.
So I was looking forward to reading book two, expecting at least the same level of story ... And it did not turn out well.
It was shallow, simple and somehow through having multiple perspectives, it was not even exciting anymore. You could guess the ending from the start on, and there were no plot turns that surprised me (which in itself is a surprise since I usually only understand plot twists when the characters do)
First let's start with the positive:
- Cyra
- partly good character development
- realistic relationship development and fights
- nice way of using foreign languages to explain story related concepts
And now the negative:
- Akos
(I kinda lost him along the way and pretty much was shocked by him in the end)
- Lazmet
(How easy and lazy to introduce a Gillian and his super power just when it suits you out of the blue.... I really didn't like how he as a character was used and how he was classic villain with nearly no depth or motivation)
- flat side characters
- strange dialogues that felt motivated by the plot and not by the characters intentions
(sometimes they even referred to a description of something someone thought)
-varying views
(This did not help the story at all since it turned it into something with no surprises and no blank spaces whatsoever
And NO, you cannot simply change the tense or person in writing in order to change view!!!)
- repetition of words right again in the next sentences without synonyms or pronouns that could refer back to them
(A mistake that can be easily avoided by good editing usually)
All in all, it was readable and I really still like Cyra and she made me carry on through this story. It was not wasted time, but I also didn't gain anything from the story either, sadly.
