As I came late to the Veronica Roth party, I began with Carve the Mark, which I enjoyed immensely, and then started on the Divergent series while waiting for Fates' release. I think this duology is much stronger writing than Divergent. Fans of that may not care for these books as much because while Divergent is a clear-cut dystopian YA, these books are flirting with, if not clearly jumping into the sci-fi genre.

Fates is, at heart, the story of Akos and Cyra, but many new or secondary characters step forward here to ask some of the big questions about revenge, mercy, and sacrifice. The choices that Akos, in particular, has to make, would seem to lead him to a clearer understanding of his mother, yet don't. It's another example of Roth not going for the easy answers. An engrossing book told from many perspectives that stitch together an amazing universe that feels like something brand new.

I really enjoyed this book. Told from multiple points of view, some in first person and some in third, this book picks up where Carve the Mark left off and continues the story of Cisi, Cyra and Akos as they navigate their ever changing worlds and whether or not their fates decide their life or they decide their life.

I did not see the twist half way through the book coming and it was really really good. Won't say more because SPOILERS.

As someone who has spent years living with someone who lives with chronic pain I continue to appreciate Roth's treatment of what that is like, not only for the person with the chronic pain but also the people who love them. A great sequel and I only wish I had read them back to back rather than waiting a year, as sometimes it is easy to forget the nuances of the last book.

I really enjoyed this book. So much happened it’s hard to wrap my head around it. But the story was really good and unique.

3/5 - Too much going on that it was hard to understand to become engaged in the story.

This book took SO long to get through because new characters kept being introduced, characters would move around too quickly, and there was too much plot going on.

By the end, Cyra annoyed me. A lot of things in this book really did not make sense to me and it was such a struggle getting through it.

I'm disappointed. I did want to like this series but it was too plot-driven and too sci-fi. I will not be reading this again.
