Lovely for what it was. As a huge Death in Paradise fan, I will say that reading this was similar to the show but lacked some of the charm and fun. Story unfolded in a very similar manner though, and it was a nice cozy island mystery. At times felt like I was reading a script, but it lacked some of the character quirks and relationships that make the show work so well. Still, I enjoyed it and will probably pop back for the next few.

Good twist at the end, but the book was very repetitive and boring for me sometimes

I am a massive fan of the Death in Paradise series and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the first of the books, written by the series creator. 'A Meditation on Murder' features DI Richard Poole, played by Ben Miller, who hates the heat and refuses to 'dress down' despite the weather. I enjoyed his narrative, the little jokes and his insights into the case. The murder itself was fascinating, kept me guessing and I didn't work out who the murderer was at all. However, I felt that Camille was not represented very well, her character in the book was dissimilar to the series. There were also some parts that were a bit repetitive, the same sentence being repeated twice in one paragraph, which led to clunky reading. I would read more of the Death in Paradise series, however I would much rather watch it on television.

This is probably the strongest of the four books in the series by Thorogood. A Meditation on Murder has the most creative and clever solution that still remains realistic.
Billed as an extension of the TV series, it was really nice to visit the classic characters and have another adventure with them. I think Thorogood does a decent job of introducing the characters to those who are not familiar with the series, however, I found that personalities did deviate from the TV series and at times seemed like they were doing something that they wouldn't have done in the show. Nonetheless, the characters seem to stay fairly true to the originals and was something I could overlook.
Now the mystery itself...it kicks off quickly, which I can appreciate, and gets right into it without any fluff. You are immediately reading about the murder and introduced to the suspects within the first few chapters, and after that, the investigation begins.
It follows a pretty standard whodunit plot, but the setting really does help make the book seem more interesting. Sainte Marie is a charming location and Thorogood does a good job of taking the reader to a tropical paradise.
The solution to the mystery was satisfying, offering a clever explanation of the murder that was somewhat predictable, but still interesting.

If you are a fan of the TV show you will enjoy this book. All the familiar characters are here as they solve the murder on the Island of Saint Marie. Even Harry makes an appearance. The group has been called out to investigate a locked room murder at a local spa. The victim has a lot of secrets and there are plenty of suspects. The mystery was good and the solution made sense. I really enjoy the setting and the characters. The book was well written and a quick enjoyable read. I look for word to reading more in this series and visiting Saint Marie. Enjoy
