Had my galley since 2018 but finally got around to reading it bc Chloe's patreon picked it for December.
And what a beautifully written story of two men, who loved the same woman and each other, and who could never quite articulate this love before it became too late. Incredible writing about grief.

I don’t think I even read the blurb before starting this other than noting “sad but not sad” and that’s an accurate summary.
I really liked how the writing completely changed from the present Ellis to the past scenes. Tragic but also gentle. Although I would have liked to see Ellis thrive a little more at the end.

Wonderfully written. I’m already excited about rereading it in the future.
“He remembered how Michael had bragged that he could swim, but he couldn't. He said that he'd read everything about swimming, firmly believing he could trip across words, like stepping stones, to the bank of experience. But he couldn't.”
This was a delightfully told tale. Once again, serendipity, brought me a good read. I think this time serendipity was the combination of the Internet and the availability of ebooks. I hung on to the ebook version of this lovely novel for a long time since no one else wanted it. I wish I could tell all those people who haven’t tried this that they are missing an interesting story.
I wasn’t sure what to make of this book when I started it. Ellis is recovering from his wife’s death, but it is clear that there is more going on. Winman takes the reader on a convoluted story that includes Ellis, his friend Michael and Annie.
What caught my attention at the beginning is that Ellis’ mother has a copy of “Sunflowers” by Van Gogh. The subject of art weaves its way through all of the book and the way Winman uses that really fascinated me.
I will be grateful if chance sends another book like Tin Man again.

A sentimental novel through and through. Tin Man tells the story of Ellis and Michael, fast friends and best friends from the day they meet at 12 years old. Through grief of losing loved ones to easy days spent swimming and being kids, theirs is a deep love — a loyal love. And yet, it’s not as simple as that and when we meet Ellis as a young man he is grieving much. This is a quaint story where the experience of reading it felt as lovely and tender as the characters and their own relationships. A quiet favorite.
I was recommended this book by one of my best friends, and I think it goes to show he knows me very well! I started this book not knowing what to expect, but I'm very glad that I went in with no prior knowledge. Michael and Ellis are kind, sweet, and rough around the edges in their own respective ways. If you like art, you will love this book. It's littered with gorgeous, flowing prose that stands out against simple writing which really lets beautiful moments shine. I wasn't particularly moved by this book, but felt melancholy while reading and I think that describes the tone very well. A hearty 3 stars for Tin Man.
