I received this from Netgalley.com.

Set in three timelines. 1907: Venetia Smith, 1944: Beth Pedley, Present day: Emma Lovett are all involved with Highbury House Gardens.

I enjoyed all the gardening stuff, the designing/planning and how different flowers/shrubbery would mature and create the garden rooms. I spent much time looking at pictures of the flowers that were mentioned. But, there were very familiar storylines making this an uncomplicated (boring?) predictable read.

1907: Venetia Smith designs the gardens at Highbury House.
1944: Highbury House is a convalescent home for recovering soldiers in WWII.
2021: Emma is hired by the family at Highbury House (descendants of the original owners) to restore the gardens to their former glory, as originally designed by Venetia Smith.

Generations of women are tied together through this house and garden. The 1944 storyline had a lot of characters to keep track of, some of which didn't fell completely necessary. Parts of the story felt overly drawn out and detailed, while other parts seemed brief. I liked how female friendships and relationships were a running theme. Sometimes they would butt heads, and other times, they would support each other.

I loved how many of the women had higher aspirations than what their life was currently like. They wanted to travel and see the world, or go to a trade school, or join organizations that were formerly restricted to men.

I wish there were some kind of sketches or pictures of what the garden could have looked like, because it sounds really beautiful.
