Deliciously twisted fairy tale with plot twist after plot twist. Trigger warning for the graphic novel: mentions of sexual/abuse/assault, rape, violence/brutality, murder, deaths, war, nudity.

The art (including colour scheme and facial expression dynamics) seems suited with the fairy tale concept so I loved it despite some people might not be feeling it. I think it's beautiful and it works well - if the graphics were more mellowed it would take away some of the impact for me.

Personally the plot is very strong. The story starts off classic and it meanders in ways that left me entertained at all times. Some would say that the story was dragged for too long but I think people might think that way as they are used to the linear progression and length of a fairy tale - regardless though, I was engaged from start to finish. The way the author explored the theme "Beauty" and the chaos and the ugliness that comes with the placing of "Beauty" high up in social standards is fascinating. Though I might not agree to some thoughts that the author is relaying to the readers, overall it's a pretty well food for thought.

I guess one would say the character development is not much in this book and I would honestly agree. None of these characters are very much likeable and I don't have any favourite characters. But I guess, since I was expecting a fairy tale which doesn't usually indulge on that kind of thing, it didn't really bother me as much - since I was so distracted by the rest of the things in the book. However, after thinking properly, I think Coddie/Beauty (MC) and 1/2 others did perhaps develop - but not as much.
It didn't really affect my reading experience though so since I enjoyed it thoroughly - I say why the hell not 5*.

So here you go. Take the 5*. Thanks for making my graphic novel experience better than the meagre rest that I tried.

An epic fairy tale which is not afraid to go to dark places and explore the story's concepts to the fullest.

An ugly girl is granted a wish to become beautiful. Her beauty is so great it mesmerizes and maddens people, spreading chaos wherever she goes and with whomever she meets.

The drawings are simple, stylized, but skilled. Kerascoët are excellent cartoonists.

Like 'Beautiful Darkness', this is a very clever reworking of the classic fairytale format. However, it's more than that—it's also a multigenerational, layered dynastic struggle, and a series of solid allegories on life. It works on its own even if you ignore its commentary on folklore; there's a trademark brand of bathos and morbid humor here that sets it apart from most reimaginings of the classics.

I really just wanted to finish this. I didn't enjoy the characters or the story or the artwork. There were some interesting undertones in this book but overall, not something I /enjoyed/ reading.

Gorgeously illustrated, with a unique story different from most fairy-tale type tales.

Coddie isn't exactly likable due to her dedication to her vanity and her desire for perfection in the kingdom (which people try again and again to give her in short-cut ways), but ultimately the story does a great job of giving her a strange wisdom that the reader can appreciate.
