This story was strange AF, but the ending was worth the wait. I thought I was going to DNF for the first half as none of the main characters had any redeeming qualities, so it was hard to feel any connection to their struggles (albeit tragic). However, once you enter the Appalachian woods, you won't want to put the book down. Gunn reminded me to always ignore what I might hear or see in old forests and to never trust what might come from Nowhere. Thanks for the blood and deaths!

The only critique is the narrators portrayal of the characters yelling was breathy and not my favorite, otherwise I really enjoyed this thriller even though I hated the main characters the entire story. This debut kept me on the edge of my seat.

A great premise full of folklore and mystery is unfortunately drowned out by unlikeable characters and a repetitive narrative. The narrative feels original and promising at first, but ends up losing steam and impact due to how repetitive it feels. The atmosphere and unsettling energy is there, but my lack of investment in the main characters (due to how questionable and unrealistic their actions are) made me disconnect from the story. It also seemed like the author was really trying to hammer in the metaphors and make a statement, the heavy-handedness of which really took away from the story itself.
